Wim’s Blog – Episode 1
Why I Started This Blog
I started this blog to share my passion for formulating skincare products. With over a decade of experience, I continue to learn and discover just how much valuable information exists. My aim is to explore a wide range of topics related to cosmetics and formulation.
Much of my time is dedicated to researching cosmetic ingredients and understanding the pathophysiology of skin conditions. What continues to surprise me is the sheer amount of misinformation online. It’s often difficult to separate fact from fiction. I hope this blog helps brand owners navigate the science with clarity and confidence.
What Makes Me an Authority on Skincare Product Formulation?
Instead of listing qualifications, I’ll share my story and let you decide. My foundation lies in science and a genuine curiosity to solve complex problems.
Academic Foundations in Biochemistry
I trained as a biochemist at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits). While there are mixed views on the value of higher education, I rely on my academic foundation every day. Understanding formulation challenges often requires deep scientific knowledge, and my education has given me the tools to approach problems methodically.
Mastering Research and Critical Thinking
My master’s degree by research offered no lectures or exams—only a research topic, and the responsibility to design, conduct, and report on my study. It was a challenging yet rewarding experience. I learned how to read critically, navigate conflicting information, and maintain discipline over long periods of independent work.
From Academia to Applied Science
After university, I worked as a scientist in the Department of Medical Microbiology at Wits. My focus was on hospital-acquired infections. I developed molecular tools to study bacterial outbreaks and used them in hospitals across South Africa. In one devastating case, nine premature babies died during an outbreak. These investigations informed better prevention methods.
Another part of my research looked at antibiotic resistance. Some bacteria are now immune to all known antibiotics—a direct result of overuse. When I hear antibiotics are used routinely for acne, I can’t help but cringe. But that’s a story for another post.
The Value of Peer Review in Skincare Science
One lesson from academia that still shapes my work is the importance of peer review. Scientific journals—especially respected ones like Nature—only publish research that passes rigorous, expert critique. I’ve had the privilege of publishing and reviewing peer-reviewed work, and I rely on this process to ensure the information I use is credible.
How I Transitioned into Cosmetic Manufacturing
After five years in research, I was offered a role in manufacturing bacteriological culture media. These products are essential in labs for identifying bacteria in both medical and food environments.
The work was complex and exciting. It gave me the ideal foundation to move into skincare product formulation. Today, I’m still the CEO of Media Mage, which manufactures ready-to-use culture media for laboratories.
Starting My Cosmetic Formulation Career
My journey in skincare began when Mandy Gonsalves—a talented skincare professional—approached me to co-found a brand called Formulage. This experience taught me how to listen to client needs, conduct research, and create formulas that deliver results.
Emulcfy’s Mission to Empower Brands
I eventually stepped away from Formulage’s marketing to focus on what I enjoy most: skincare product formulation. At Emulcfy, I support both new and established brands by using everything I’ve learned to develop solutions that work. I learn from every project and every founder I collaborate with. That’s what makes this industry so rewarding.
What You Can Expect from This Blog Series
This blog is written for founders and brand owners navigating a technical industry. There’s plenty of complexity—and unfortunately, plenty of bad advice. I’ll do my best to make the science accessible, the processes clear, and your decisions more informed.
