Why Sunscreen Matters in Skincare
It continues to surprise me how few requests we receive at Emulcfy for private label products that include sunscreens. Sunscreen is a sensitive and often misunderstood topic. This is likely because the science behind it is both complex and highly regulated. However, the need for clear understanding is essential—especially for brand owners looking to expand their skincare range responsibly.
After reviewing numerous research papers and attending expert-led webinars, I’ve come to realise that many of the concerns around sunscreen are based on outdated or incomplete information. Therefore, I’ve written this article to make the topic more approachable and to highlight why sunscreens should be considered a core feature in your skincare line.
Understanding UV Radiation and Its Effects
To begin with, the sun emits several forms of radiation, one of which is ultraviolet (UV) light. This type of radiation can damage the skin in various ways. Specifically, UVB rays are responsible for sunburn—an easy way to remember this is that “B” stands for “burn.” On the other hand, UVA rays are more insidious. Although they don’t cause immediate redness, they penetrate deeper into the skin, where they can alter DNA and contribute to skin cancer over time.
How the Skin Protects Itself
When exposed to sunlight, the skin reacts by producing melanin, which serves as a natural protective barrier. Consequently, skin darkens as melanin increases. If exposure becomes excessive, the skin shifts into a state of inflammation, which manifests as redness or sunburn. This response is the reason individuals with ancestry from sunny climates tend to have darker skin tones.
Melanoma Risk Isn’t Always Visible
Although darker skin tones are less prone to developing melanoma, the risk still exists. More importantly, detection can be delayed, as symptoms are harder to notice. As a result, cases often go undiagnosed until later stages. That’s why education and proactive protection matter across all demographics.
What SPF Really Means
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. Essentially, it indicates how much longer someone can stay in the sun without burning, compared to unprotected skin. For instance, SPF 20 theoretically allows you to remain in the sun 20 times longer. Similarly, SPF 50 provides 50 times more protection. But there’s a catch—these figures are based on lab conditions where sunscreen is applied in thick, even layers.
Real-World Limitations of SPF
In practice, most people apply sunscreen unevenly or use far too little. Furthermore, activities like swimming, sweating, or simply wearing clothing can rub it off. I’ve experienced this myself while hiking—despite using high-SPF sunscreen, I’ve learned I need to reapply frequently to maintain protection. Therefore, SPF is only part of the story.
The Importance of UVA Protection
SPF values only reflect protection against UVB. However, UVA rays are just as harmful. For this reason, sunscreens often include a “+” sign to show that they offer UVA coverage as well. For example, SPF 30+ means the product provides additional UVA defense. To make an SPF claim on your packaging, regulations require in vivo testing. Because of that, we advise starting with in vitro tests, which are more affordable and provide a strong indication of success. There’s a common misconception that SPF 100 is significantly better than SPF 30. In reality, SPF 15 blocks around 93% of UVB, SPF 30 blocks 97%, and SPF 50 blocks 98%. Although SPF 100 exists, it only improves protection by about 1%, while doubling the concentration of ingredients. Therefore, we believe SPF 30+ offers the best compromise between efficacy, formulation flexibility, and cost.
Types of Sunscreen Filters
All sunscreen ingredients fall into two categories: reflectors (also known as physical filters) and absorbers (also known as chemical filters). Reflectors like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide work by deflecting UV rays. They are environmentally safe and relatively cost-effective. However, they often leave a white or grey residue, which is highly visible on darker skin tones.
The Role of UV Absorbers
UV absorbers, on the other hand, are synthetic compounds that absorb radiation and convert it into heat. While these do not create a white cast, their safety profile depends heavily on formulation. Some are banned in Europe due to potential hormone disruption or environmental damage. Others have poor reputations based solely on social media, not science.
